Experiment: Wheat

Almost two years ago I went to the Maine Organic Farmers and Growers Association’s (MOFGA) Common Ground Country Fair.  There, I listened to a man talk about growing grains and I found a book called How Batistine Makes Bread by Treska Lindsey.  The book is a beautiful picture book about a girl who bakes bread from scratch, really scratch.  I decided to try to follow in Batistine’s footsteps.  So, last fall I seeded my wheat, then I covered in with leaves to help it overwinter.  This spring it grew taller and taller and finally started fruiting.  Then the fruits grew bigger and the stalks started to turn a yellow brown.  Finally, this weekend my parents helped me harvest the wheat.  It still needs to dry more, and then there will be another installment of this adventure with threshing and winnowing and grinding, etc. DSC_0173 DSC_017420140704_100936 DSC_020520140704_120058 DSC_0207
